Clinton emerged from the 2006 midterm elections as the candidate to beat in the money race. She raised nearly $52 million between 2001 and 2006 for her Senate re-election. Her presidential fundraising, which includes about $10 million left over from her Senate race, is tops so far, but she hasn’t pulled so far ahead of the Democratic pack as to seem the inevitable nominee. Clinton has set the goal of raising $75 million in 2007 alone. She has asked her top tier of supporters, the “HillBlazers,” to raise at least $1 million each from other donors—10 times the amount that George W. Bush’s “Pioneers” were asked to raise in 2000.
